7 lessons I’ve learnt from 7 years in business

Whoop whoop 🙌

This month I’m celebrating 7 years in business. 🎂🎉

It’s been a wild ride and along the way, I learned many important lessons (and picked up quite a few sayings and mantras that I repeat to myself and others very often).

In this blog post, I want to share with you

the 7 most impactful lessons from 7 years in business!

Let’s go!

1. Put yourself first

Your health, well-being and happiness matter. Prioritise self-care and quality time off work!

This is probably the most important lesson, but so many business owners leave themselves till the end, after all the other goals are achieved (or at least well underway).

2. Say NO more often

It’s so easy to say yes to any new opportunity that comes our way (especially at the beginning when we’re desperate for any new client). But further down the road you’ll realise that the goal isn’t to get just any client, but THE PERFECT CLIENT for you.

Be very intentional about what you say YES to and create more empty space for the right opportunity to come your way.

3. You don’t have to go it alone

We’re not superheroes and asking for help is not a weakness, but a strength.

Make sure that early on in your journey you find a tribe of like-minded people who understand you, support you and motivate you! It’s so much more fun when you have someone who truly understands what you’re going through to share the ups and downs with.

4. You do you

Do your thing, do things your way, find your way of doing things, follow your path and don’t worry about others.

One of my favourite sayings is to “stop shoulding yourself” which means stop saying “I should be doing this and that” because a random person mentioned it and it sounded like a good idea.

If you focus on working in your zone of genius, you’ll avoid comparisonitis and you’ll keep your imposter at bay because you’ll be in the zone doing what you love and what only you can do your way!

5. Feel the fear and do it anyway

Starting and growing a business is the biggest personal development journey you’ll ever embark on (aside from patenting maybe, but I don’t have any experience with that). It’ll push you to the limits of your abilities and you’ll have to expand your comfort zone to succeed.

But it’s so worth it! I always say that good things come to those who challenge themselves. To grow, we need to face our fears and get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

[If you have a supportive tribe around you as mentioned in the previous point, it’s much easier to put yourself out there and do scary things!]

6. Perfection is a fairy tale

We often want everything to be perfect before we put it out there and put ourselves at risk of being judged by others. But perfection can hold us back from showing up as our true authentic selves and connecting with people on a deeper level.

The best thing you can do is to start now and perfect later. Or even better, start now and don’t worry about perfection. At first, take baby steps, but keep on going. It’s OK to be consistently inconsistent, as long as you keep on showing up.

7. Don’t be afraid to sell

We’re in business to make money and wanting to have a successful business that supports you financially is not something to be ashamed of. We all deserve financial freedom and to achieve that, we need to get our offering out there and sell!

I’ve been learning a lot about the art of selling lately, but the first step on this journey was working on my money mindset. Acknowledging that money is not evil and wanting to be rich doesn’t make me a bad person.

It’s been an eye-opening experience thus far (and I’ve only scratched the surface)!
